The pores found on the leaves are important for water and gas transport. Guard cells control pore size to reduce the risk of dehydration, but water needs to be allowed to evaporate in order to keep water moving up the xylem.

The other type of pore is found in plant cell walls and it really important to allow the movement of sugars, gases, water and chemical messages between cells. It’s like a little straw and is called plasmodesmata. <– my spell checker doesn't like that word!
