It really depends which hormones you don’t have enough of! But in genereal stuff just doesn’t work very well! Here are a few examples of lacking certain hormones:

Thyroxine: feeling cold, weight gain, slow heart rate, low blood pressure

Insulin: low energy levels. tiredness, going to the toilet a lot, COMA, DEATH

Oestrogen: irregular periods, tiredness. Early menopause (hot sweats, sleeplessness), infertility or poor fertility, reduced bone density.

Testosterone: Reduced facial/body hair, gynecomastia (“man boobs”), infertility, reduced muscle mass

Well it completely depends on which hormones we’re talking about, but generally it leads to ill health or disease states! Some will have to be absent or have low levels for a long time to have an effect while the lower amounts of others for short periods can be life threatening!

For example low oestrogen in women after the menopause often leads to low bone density overtime… this called “osteoporosis” (which literally translates as “bones with pores”). You can see what the difference between healthy and brittle bones here: http://www.webmd.com/osteoporosis/ss/slideshow-osteoporosis-overview

When it comes to something like insulin though… if your levels drop your cells can’t absorb the sugar from the bloodstream and this can build up and reach dangerous concentrations or the cells will become energy hungry and starve!

Loss of other things like Acetylcholine and Dopamine in the brain can contribute to diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
